![]() Caption: ANA-MPA file photograph of Defence Minister Evangelos Meimarakis. Shorter military service in 2009 06/09/2009 National Defence Minister Evangelos Meimarakis on Tuesday revealed the government's plans to reduce mandatory military service for young men in the Greek Army by three months, so that it lasts nine months in total. Speaking during the day-time television programme "Proti Grammi" broadcast by the state channel NET, Meimarakis said the measure would go into effect for all those presenting themselves in August, while there would also be a shorter reductions for those that presented themselves for military service within 2009. Specifically, those who began their national military service last February will serve 11 months in total, while those that began in May will serve 10 months. Previously, the length of mandatory military service had been exactly one year. The minister also clarified that once the duration of national service in the Army was reduced to nine months, all conscripts will be posted in regional areas outside the capital. The length of military service in the Greek Navy and Air Force will continue to be one year, while Meimarakis said he was in favour of eventually phasing out the use of conscripts in the navy and air force in favour of professional troops. The minister said the reduction in military service was made possible by an increase in the number of professional troops, the use of information technology, the new layout of army bases and the gradual progress in setting up electronic security systems to guard military facilities. Military service
Tuesday October 20, 2009 The Defense Ministry is examining the possibility of conscripts not serving in the air force or navy, sources said yesterday. There are no plans to reduce military service though. At present, basic military service in the army is 12 months, down from 18 months earlier this decade. The New Democracy government had suggested earlier this year it would reduce it to nine months. Link -------------------- ![]() |

True. However it seems that PASOK who now is in power have no plans - not at this moment - to reduce the military service to 9 months. It was Nea Dimokratia who wanted to reduce the military service from 12 months to 9 months. -------------------- ![]() |

I just wish that Turkish 15 months of long term and 6 short term military service will not be made to 12 months of standard service for everybody. Cos I'll be most probably in the category of 6 months short term military service soon
I don't want a 6 months more slavery to Turkish military |

It should be a standard service for everyone regardless of whether you went to university or not, especially for a country like turkey where there is wide inequality. If a poor villagers son has to do 12 months the prime ministers son also better do his 12 months.

Conscripts soon to serve only in the army
Saturday November 7, 2009 Military service in the navy and air force will be gradually phased out over the next two years so that conscripts will only serve in the army, the government revealed yesterday. Such a move had been mooted by the previous New Democracy administration but Defense Minister Evangelos Venizelos said yesterday that the government was definitely moving ahead with the latest in a series of cutbacks in military service. The basic military service in the army is now 12 months, which is down from 18 months earlier this decade. During the phasing-out period, only conscripts with skills that are suitable for the air force or navy will be sent to serve there, Venizelos said. He added that conscripts who carry out their military service after they have finished their tertiary studies will be allocated to branches of the armed forces where their knowledge can be put to good use. We need global demilitarization. Burning of all post-industrial revolution technology in terms of weaponry and go back to fighting with swords and shields.
