Greece has been slow to recognize that its large and vibrant Jewish community was singled out for annihilation. `There was such an unbearable silence about the Jews of Salonika' . . . To the discomfort of local Greek nationalists, [Salonika's] is a history that was largely Jewish during the 500 years of Ottoman Turkish occupation . . . All evidence of this past is virtually gone now, and not only because of the Nazis . . . Greece, a country where more than 95 percent of the population is Orthodox Christian, is still suspicious of its minorities, religious and ethnic, and still reluctant to grant them their place in history . . . The Jewish contribution to the city's past is not the only historical memory to have fallen victim here to a collective amnesia . . . the five centuries of Ottoman rule are referred to euphemistically as the `post-Byzantine' period . . . Such torturing of history, and reality, makes for a heavy burden, one that many here hope will be shed as this city -- and the turbulent region that it borders -- moves closer to modern European standards. `It is impossible to live within the European Union without being really European,' said Mr. Sefiha. `Greece still has to make a lot of steps in this direction.'"

In the Greek case, the pupils are thought to be intolerant of other nations and ethnic groups (outside and within Greece). The Greek educational system teaches them and makes them believe that the Greeks are superior to all others; that the Greeks are the direct descendent of the illustrious ancient Greeks, who are said to be the grea-*test*-('") civilization of ancient times and the point of departure of Western civilization; and that the Greeks (presumably the ancient Greeks) are the creators of all major human values with an incomparable contribution to world culture. greekturkish/laugh.gif Greek students are also taught that their nation is more than 3000 years old. They do not recognize the well-known fact that nationhood is a very recent phenomenon in human history and that hardly any Greek nation or people existed in the classical ancient Greek cultural-linguistic milieu of antagonistic city-states. Again the attempt at historical depth is characteristic of most national historical narratives, but the Greek case is one of the most extreme, comparable only to the Israeli or Ethiopian cases. Furthermore it is deeply held and provides the Greeks of today with one of the most glorious myths ever conceived. It gives rise to self-esteem but also to arrogance and haughtiness towards all others.

All this is deeply ingrained and remains valid for most adult Greek individuals (e.g. schoolteachers, administrators, politicians, diplomats even several academics which should have known better) who do not bother to check whether the information handed over to them in school bears correspondence to historical reality. greekturkish/shakehead.gif After all it is such a soothing collective identity for Greeks, so why bother to question it?

What's Wrong with Turkey? Part II

Was the Turkish Destruction of Smyrna Vengeance?

Akyol wrote that the Turks were not invading Smyrna, they were liberating the city from the occupying Greek army. He also wrote that the Greeks had previously committed atrocities against the Turks and that “The bloodshed in Smyrna in September, 1922 was an act of vengeance.” Undoubtedly vengeance played a role but that explanation is incomplete. If the bloodshed in Smyrna was an act of vengeance against the Greeks then why did the Turks also annihilate the Armenian population of Smyrna? If atrocities committed by Greeks during the re-occupation of Smyrna is the explanation for Turkish atrocities, then why did the Turks commit atrocities against the Armenians and Greeks in Smyrna before the Greek re-occupation? It has been estimated that during the seven centuries of Turkish presence in Asia Minor several millions of Greeks,… were systematically massacred.

John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States (1824-1828) had the following to say about the suffering of the Greeks under the Turks:

“If ever insurrection was holy in the eyes of God, such was that of the Greeks against their Mahometan oppressors… They were suffered to be overwhelmed by the whole mass of the Ottoman power; cheered only by the sympathies of all the civilized world, but without a finger raised to sustain or relieve them by the Christian governments of Europe; while the sword of extermination, instinct with the spirit of the Koran, was passing in merciless horror over the classical regions of Greece, the birth-place of philosophy, of poetry, of eloquence, of all the arts that embellish, and all the sciences that dignify the human character.”

The reason why the allies assigned Greece the responsibility to administer Smyrna after World War I was stated by Alexander Millerand, president of the Supreme Allied Council as follows:

“The Turkish government not only failed in its duty to protect its non-Turkish citizens from the looting, violence and murders, but there are many indications that the Turkish government itself was responsible for directing and organizing the most cruel attacks against the populations, which it was supposed to protect. For these reasons, the Allied powers have decided to liberate from the Turkish yoke all the lands where the majority of the people were non-Turks."

Persecution against the Greeks in Turkey continues to this very day.

The Turkish Paradox

Why were the Turks so brutal to the Armenians and yet as Mr. Akyol pointed out in his previous article, did they offer refuge to Jews fleeing from European Nations. In order to understand this we need to first understand the concept of Dhimma. Tudor Parfitt in his book, The Jews in Palestine 1800-1882 (The Boydell Press, 1987) explains that concept as follows:

“Dhimma is the relationship between the protector (in this case the Sultan) and the protected (the Dhimmi) and was the dominant factor in the status of the ahl al-kitab (People of the Book) i.e. Jews, Christians, Sabeans, (sabi’un) and later Persian Zoroastrians, in the Muslim state. Dhimma required the state to protect the life and property of the Dhimmi, exempt him from military service and allow him freedom of worship, while the Dhimmi was expected to pay the poll tax(cizye), not to insult Islam, not to build new places of worship and to dress in a distinctive fashion in order not to be mistaken for a Muslim. In cases of civil and family law, non-Muslims had judicial autonomy except in such cases which involved both a Dhimmi and a Muslim, in which event the case would be tried before a Muslim court (mahkama) where the Dhimmi’s legal -*test*-('")imony was unacceptable…The measure of religious toleration that obtained under Islam had to be purchased: and the price was a considerable one."

One reason it was difficult to obey the Dhimma contract was that in addition to infidels being required to pay exorbitant taxes they were also required to live in lowliness and degradation. This was explained by the Sultan of Morocco, Mulay Abd ar –Rahman in a letter he wrote in 1841 to the French Consulate at Tangiers as follows:

“The Jews of Our fortunate Country have received guarantees from which they benefit in exchange for their carrying out the conditions imposed by our religious Law on those people who enjoyed its protection: these conditions have been and still are observed by our coreligionists. If the Jews respect these conditions, Our Law prohibits the spilling of their blood and enjoins the protection of their belongings, but if they break so much as a single condition, [then] Our blessed Law permits their blood to be spilt and their belongings to be taken. Our glorious faith only allows them the marks of lowliness and degradation, thus the sole fact that a Jew raises his voice against a Muslim constitutes a violation of the conditions of protection.”

An example of the consequences of violating the Dhimma contract is given by a letter written by Porter, a British ambassador to Turkey to a colleague in London on June 3, 1758, about an unfortunate Jew and an Armenian who thought the dress codes had been forgotten. I include an excerpt below:

“This time of Ramazan is mostly taken up by day in sleep, by night in eating, so that we have few occurrences of any importance, except what the Grand Seignor [Sultan Mustafa III] himself affords us he is determin’d to keep to his laws, and to have them executed, that concerning dress has been often repeated, and with uncommon solemnity, yet as in the former reigns, after some weeks it was seldom attended to, but gradually transgress’d, these people whose ruling passion is directed that way, thought it was forgot, and betook themselves to their old course, a Jew on his Sabbath was the first victim, the Grand Seignor going the rounds incognito, met him, and not having the Executioner with him, without sending him [the Jew] to the Vizir, had him executed, and his throat cut that moment, the day after an Armenian follow’d, he was sent to the Vizir, who attempted to save him, and and condemn’d him to the Galleys, but the Capigilar Cheaia [head of the guards] came to the Porte at night, attended with the executioner, to know what was become of the delinquent, that first Minister had him brought directly from the Galleys and his head struck off, that he might inform his Master he had anticipated his Orders.”

Jews and Armenians as long as they meekly tolerated the depredations of Dhimmitude and obeyed all the rules were generally not killed outright because as jizya [tax] paying infidels they was considered a valuable commodity. Joan Peters, in her book From Time Immemorial, wrote how after the conquest of Alexandria, Caliph Omar received word from his general describing the wealth they had just attained.

“I have captured a city from the description of which I shall refrain. Suffice it to say that I have seized therein 4,000 villas with 4,000 baths, 40,000 poll-tax paying Jews and four hundred places of entertainment for the royalty."

Akyol responded to two quotes from the Koran from my previous article, by referring the reader to two articles he had written. In one of those articles “ Still Standing For Islam and Against Terrorism," Mr. Akyol, quoted Karen Armstrong’s writings about the aftermath of the fighting at Badr as follows:

“The Muslims were jubilant. They began to round up prisoners and, in the usual Arab fashion, started to kill them, but Muhammad put a stop to this. A revelation came down saying that the prisoners of war were to be ransomed. “

The quote chosen by Akyol demonstrates that money was what kept the Muslims from murdering the infidel. Ransom was why Muhammad put a stop to the Muslim murder of the prisoners of war from Badr. Money is the reason that subjugated people, who pay the jizya and karaj taxes are not killed.

Another argument in Akyol’s article is that according to Islam there is no compulsion in religion. Although Muslims have violated this law frequently, a recent example being the forced conversion of the wife of an Egyptian priest, there have actually been cases where they have compelled infidels not to convert.

Bernard Lewis, in his book The Arabs in History, wrote that during:

“the time of `Abd al-Malik the Muslim government actually resorted to discouraging conversion … in order to restore the failing revenues of the state."

In 1492, when Spain expelled the Jews, Sultan Bayazid II ordered the governors of the provinces of the Ottoman Empire "not to refuse the Jews entry or cause them difficulties, but to receive them cordially." This act of kindness may have at least in part been motivated by financial need. The Sultan even said that: "the Catholic monarch Ferdinand was wrongly considered as wise, since he impoverished Spain by the expulsion of the Jews, and enriched Turkey".

Serge Trifkovic, in an article in Chronicles Magazine titled Turkey in the European Union: a lethal fait accompli (10/29/04), argued that tolerance did not play a role in the welcome extended to the Jews by Sultan Bayazid II. He wrote:

“The act that resonates with modern Ottoman apologists was the invitation to the Jews of Spain to resettle in the Sultan's lands after expulsion under Ferdinand and Isabella. They were invited not because of the Turks' 'tolerance,' however, but primarily because it was necessary to replace the vast numbers of Christians who had been killed, expelled, or reduced to penury, and thus to maintain the Sultan's tax base. The fact that the Ottoman Jews held a more favored status within the Empire than the giaours (infidel Christian dogs) is as much a reason for celebration of the Ottoman 'tolerance' as is the fact that the Nazis were somewhat more 'tolerant' of occupied Slavs than of the Jews."

The Jews of Turkey as a whole did not violate the Dhimma contract. The Armenians by rebelling and seeking assistance from foreign powers did violate the contract. The Zionist movement also violated the Dhimma contract by advocating an independent state of Israel. This is one explanation for the paradox of Turkey giving refuge to Jews and massacring Armenians and threatening to massacre Jews in Palestine.

A report of the Chief Dragoman (Turkish-speaking interpreter) of the British embassy regarding the 1894-96 massacres supports this explanation. He wrote:

"…[The perpetrators] are guided in their general action by the prescriptions of the Sheri [Sharia] Law. That law prescribes that if the 'rayah' [Dhimmi] Christian attempts, by having recourse to foreign powers, to overstep the limits of privileges allowed them by their Mussulman [Muslim] masters, and free themselves from their bondage, their lives and property are to be forfeited, and are at the mercy of the Mussulmans. To the Turkish mind the Armenians had tried to overstep those limits by appealing to foreign powers, especially England. They therefore considered it their religious duty and a righteous thing to destroy and seize the lives and properties of the Armenians…"

Violation of the Dhimma contract is not the only reason the Armenians of Turkey were massacred and the Jews of Palestine were threatened with massacre. The Jews of Palestine, and the Armenians of Turkey had one crucial thing in common that endangered them, Turkey was occupying their homeland and they wanted to liberate their homeland. The ultimate crime as far as the Turks were concerned was the Armenian, and Jewish desire for freedom, because in addition to violating the Dhimma contract, such freedom threatened the integrity of their empire.

Liberation, the Root Cause of Turkish Revenge

Turkish vengeance occurred when they felt there was a threat to the integrity of their empire. In April 1876 when Bulgarians fought for their freedom, the Turks committed mass slaughter in Bulgaria, killing 12000-15,000 Bulgarians.

Graber, in his book, Caravans to Oblivion, The Armenian Genocide, explained how the threat of Armenian liberation led to revenge by the Turkish authorities.

“It was in Geneva in 1887 that the first radical Armenian political organization was born. It was called Hunchak, meaning 'bell,' and it was revolutionary in its aims. It was followed in 1890 by the foundation of the much more important and longer lived Dashnakstutium. Both organizations called for an independent Armenia…This was basically a new position for the Armenians. Its effect on Abdulhamid was predictable. He felt he was faced with a sinister revolution that he must use all his resources to combat.

"When Armenian resistance first arose in 1893, however, it was not driven by urban radicals or intellectual leaders. Its voice was the Armenian peasantry in Sassun, deep in the Armenian mountains. It was not based primarily on a yearning for freedom; its cause was much nearer to the hearts of a peasant society. The wandering Kurdish tribes had been given tacit allowance by the sultan to extort the peasant Armenian communities in the way that gangsters extort protection money for use of their turf. According to the historian Christopher J. Walker, “The Kurdish aghas [commanders] used to demand from them a kind of protection tax – an annual due of crops, cattle, silver, iron ore…agricultural implements or clothes… In many places the Armenians were forced to pay double taxes…

"By 1892 Abdulhamid had authorized the formation of some thirty regiments of Hamideye, each about five hundred men strong and each composed of itinerant Kurds whose spoken or unspoken function was to suppress the Armenians. To defend themselves against the depredations of the Kurds and the corruption of the Turkish officials, Armenian peasants in the Sassun district retreated into the mountains and held out against successive attacks mounted by Kurds and regular Turkish army units. …

"In the end, despite some early success, the Armenian peasants were overrun and murdered – men, women and children – in their mountain hideouts.”

The Armenian desire for national liberation ultimately led to their destruction. Graber wrote that:

“In November 1914, the Russians published a declaration that promised national liberation to the Armenians on the condition that they oppose their Ottoman masters. Some Armenians answered the call; small numbers of Armenian soldiers deserted from the Turkish army and some in the areas of the battles gave assistance to the Russian forces... In the winter of 1914-15, the Ottoman army mounted a major attack against the Russians… Enver Pasha, who had assumed command of the Third Army, made fatal errors which led to the loss of most of his forces and the loss of wide stretches of territory to the Russian army. There are those who point to Enver Pasha’s direct responsibility for the military defeat as the motive for his search for a scapegoat; the Armenians were accused of treachery by Enver Pasha and his supporters. It was alleged that Armenian betrayal, according to the Empire’s rulers, had caused the defeat… To this day, the Turkish government claims the treachery of the Armenians as the explanation for what subsequently befell them.

"During the night, between April 23 and April 24, 1915, the Constantinople police broke into the homes of the Armenian elite in the city. Two hundred thirty five Armenian leaders politicians, writers, educators, lawyers, etc. – were taken to the police station and then deported.”

The method of elimination by deportation is explained by Graber as follows:

“The Young Turks had no railroad system to collect and dispose of the Armenians. Despite the efforts to proceed with the construction of the Berlin to Baghdad railroad, there were few miles of track available, and the condition of most highways was appalling. Consequently, those charged by the Teshkilati Mahsusa with the responsibility of eliminating the Armenian community evolved a system of such primitive brutality that even today, after our century has witnessed the indiscriminate massacre of many millions, the Ittihadist project still evokes the most fundamental feelings of revulsion. There is no doubt that if a more sophisticated machinery for slaughter had been available, the Young Turks would have used it. Lacking such machinery, their system of eradication worked along the following lines, as described by one scholar of the period:

"'Initially all the able-bodied men of a certain town or village would be ordered, either by a public crier or by an official proclamation nailed to the walls, to present themselves at the Konak [government building]. The proclamation stated that the Armenian population would be deported, gave the official reasons for it, and assured them that the government was benevolent. Once at the Konak, they would be jailed for a day or two. No reason was given. Then they would be led out of jail and marched out of town. At the first lonely halting place they would be shot, or bayoneted to death. Some days later the old men and the women and children were summoned in the same way; they were often given a few days grace, but then they had to leave. It was their misfortune not to be killed at the first desolate place. The government’s reasoning appears to have been: the men might pose a threat – leaders might spring up among them, who would defy the order; but why waste valuable lead on women, old men and children? Instead they were forced to walk, endlessly, along pre-arranged routes, until they died from thirst, hunger, exposure, or exhaustion.'"

Armenians were also slaughtered enroute. The following is a story of a young girl, who was deported:

“I was twelve years old, I was with my mother. They drove us with whips and we had no water. It was very hot and many of us died because there was no water. They drove us with whips, I do not know how many days and nights and weeks, until we came to the Arabian Desert. My sisters and the little baby died on the way. We went to a town, I do not know its name. The streets were full of dead, all cut to pieces. They drove us over them. I kept dreaming about that. We came to a place on the Desert, a hollow place in the sand, with hills all around it. There were thousands of us there, many, many thousands, all women and girl children. They herded us like sheep into the hollow. Then it was dark and we heard firing all around. We said, “The killing has begun.” All night we waited for them, my mother and I, we waited for them to reach us. But they did not come, and in the morning, when we looked around, no one was killed. No one was killed at all. They had not been killing us. They had been signaling to the wild tribes that we were there. The Kurds came later in the morning, in the daylight; the Kurds and many other kinds of men from the Desert; they came over the hills and rode down and began killing us. All day long they were killing; you see, there were so many of us. All they did not think they could sell, they killed. They kept on killing all night and in the morning—in the morning they killed my mother.”

What's Wrong with Turkey? Part III

Jewish Liberation and The Revenge of the Turks

A declaration about Zionism released in January 25, 1915 by the Turkish Authorities and published by Haherut, a Hebrew language newspaper, demonstrates that Turkish hostility to Jews in Palestine resulted from the threat of Jewish liberation. The declaration was:

“The exalted Government, in its resistance to the dangerous element known as Zionism, which is struggling to create a Jewish government in the Palestinian area of the Ottoman Kingdom and thus placing its own people in jeopardy, has ordered the confiscation of all postal stamps, Zionist flags, paper money, banknotes, etc., and has declared the dissolution of the Zionist organizations and associations, which were secretly established. It has now become known to us that other mischief makers are maliciously engaged in libelous attempts to assert that our measures are directed against all Jews. These have no application to all of those Jews who uphold our covenant…We hope and pray that they will be forever safe, as in the past…It is only the Zionists and Zionism, that corrupt incendiary and rebellious element, together with other groups with such delusionary aspirations, which we must vanquish.”

Yair Auron, in his book The Banality of Indifference, Zionism and the Armenian Genocide, wrote how the Turks almost annihilated the Jewish community of Palestine because of the threat of Zionism. He wrote:

“In the spring of 1917, the small Jewish community in Palestine was stunned by an order issued by the Turkish authorities for the deportation of the 5,000 Jews from Tel Aviv to the small farming villages in the Sharon Plain and the Galilee. This may have been the beginning of a plan to deport the Jews in the villages and in the Jerusalem region as an emergency war measure, and the decree aroused grave concern about the future of the Jewish settlement in the country. When the deportation order became known to the Nili organization [a hebrew spy organization], its members publicized the plan in the world press. American Jewry was shocked, and the nations fighting against Turkey released reports on Turkish intentions to exterminate the Jews in Palestine, as they had already done to the Armenians. Public opinion in the neutral countries, as well as in Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was outraged and Jamal Pasha was forced to reconsider his plan of action.

Mustafa Kemal’s Reforms and Turkish Humanitarianism

Mustafa Kemal believed that Islam was responsible for Turkish enmity toward the Western world as well as Turkish regression. In a speech he gave in March 1923 he said:

"You know there is an unforgiving enmity between the societies of the Muslim world and the masses of the Christian world. Muslims became eternal enemies of Christians, and Christians those of Muslims. They viewed each other as non-believers, fanatics. The two worlds co-existed with this fanaticism and enmity. As a result of this enmity, the Muslim world was distanced from the western progress that took a new form and color every century. Because, Muslims viewed progress with disdain and disgust. At the same time, the Muslim world had to hold on to its arms as a result of this enmity that lasted for centuries between the two groups. This continuous occupation with arms, enmity, and disdain for western progress constitute another important cause of our regression."

Mustafa Kemal abolished the Caliphate, replaced Shariah rule with penal codes based on European models, emancipated women, enforced equality for all citizens regardless of religion, adopted modern Western clothing and the Latin script, and abolished the religious education system.

It is possible that Mustafa Kemal’s reforms improved the attitude of the Turks toward Turkish Jews, and made possible the heroic and humanitarian efforts made by men such as Salahattin Ulkumen to save Turkish Jews from the Nazis during World War II.

The Failure of Democracy in Turkey

In 1924 and again in 1930 President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk approved the formation of opposition parties in his effort to introduce democracy in Turkey. As soon as the parties began to speak publicly, they drew wide spread political support, and it became clear that people were dissatisfied with the governments secularist and economic policies. In both cases, the parties were promptly disbanded. The next attempt to transition toward a multiparty democracy occurred in 1945. The president of Turkey, Ismet Inonu, agreed to allow a multiparty system and opposition parties quickly formed. The Democratic opposition party (DP), that supported bringing Islam into politics won the election but opposition to it grew. The DP responded with legislation that restricted freedom of speech and the press. In 1960, the military overthrew the DP government. In the next election Turkish voters voted in the successor parties to the DP, the Justice Party and the New Turkey Party They essentially put back into power the party that was ousted by the military in preceding year. In 1995 Necmettin Erbakan was elected prime minister of Turkey. His radicalism can be seen in a speech he gave to Kurds, pleaded for their support "to save the world from European infidels." Three years later, the Constitutional Court banned the Welfare Party on the grounds that it was engaged in fundamentalist activity and was violating the secular principles of the Turkish constitution. In the 1999 elections most of the former members of the Welfare party were reelected to parliament as members of the new Virtue party. Today, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leader of the Justice and Development Party is prime minister even though he was sentenced to jail in 1998 for inciting religious hatred. If it wasn’t for the military, Turkey would probably have reverted to a Shariah state long ago. There are many who complain that because of the military Turkey is not democratic enough, the truth is that without the military Turkey would not be democratic at all.

The opinions of the Turkish masses are moving against the United States and Israel partly as a result of Prime Minister Erdogan governments influence over the media according to an article by Soner Cagaptay in the Middle East Quarterly. The growing influence of Islam and the growing hostility toward Israel and the United States is alarming because it indicates that Turkey is regressing from the enlightenment that made possible the rescue of Jews during World War II toward the dark ages of Turkey’s fundamentalist past.

Should Turkey be Accepted into the European Union?

The secular Turkish army has been a stabilizing force on Turkey in the past but if Turkey joins the European Union it is unlikely to be able to play this role. The Anatolia news agency quoted the European Union envoy to Turkey, Ambassador Hansjorg Kretschmer, as saying that “the European Turkey's EU-inspired democracy reforms will be incomplete if the country fails to curb the influence its powerful army wields in politics” If the influence of the army is eliminated Europe may find itself with an Islamic army in its midst.

Some European Leaders in their eagerness to appease the Islamic world are oblivious to this threat. New EU commissioner Olli Rehnn said on Oct. 20 that "Turkey's EU membership will open new horizons for both Turkey and the Union and bring forth new challenges." On the same day Germany's foreign minister Joschka Fischer went a step further and declared that Turkish entry to the EU would be as important for Europe as the D-Day invasion 60 years ago - a key way to liberate Europe from the threat of insecurity from the Middle East and "terrorist ideas."

In light of these comments by European leaders, I think the most suitable way to finish this article is with the final sentence of Marjorie Housepian Dobkin’s book The Smyrna Affair.

“The course of history in recent years suggests that the ultimate victims may be those who delude themselves.”

Appendix

Here is a corroborating account to that told by Serge Trifkovic about the tragic attack on the Armenian Patriarch Chrysostomos as told by Marjorie Housepian Dobkin. Archbishop Chrysostomos tried to protect his Armenian flock from the depredations of the Turks, and when given an opportunity to flee by an American friend refused to abandon them. Marjorie Dobkin recounts his fate below:

“The Patriarch was walking slowly down the steps of the Konak when the [Turkish] General appeared on the balcony and cried out to waiting mob, 'Treat him as he deserves!' The crowd fell upon Chrysostomos with guttural shrieks and dragged him down the street until they reached a barber shop where Ismael, the Jewish proprietor, was peering nervously from his doorway. Someone pushed the barber aside, grabbed a white sheet, and tied it around Chrysostomos's neck, shouting, 'Give him a shave!'

"They tore out the Patriarch's beard, gouged out his eyes with knives, cut off his ears, his nose, and his hands. A dozen French marines who had accompanied Chrysostomos to the government house were standing by, beside themselves. Several of the men jumped instinctively forward to intervene, but the officer in charge forbade them to move. 'He had his hand on his gun, though he was trembling himself,' one of the men said later, 'so we dared not lift ours. They finished Chrysostomos there before our eyes.'”

Divide and conquer
by Noam Chomsky
(interviewed by David Barsamian)

It's happening right now with the Kurds. The West is trying to mobilize Iraqi Kurds to destroy Turkish Kurds, who are by far the largest group and historically the most oppressed. Apart from what we might think of those guerrillas, there's no doubt that they had substantial popular support in southeastern Turkey.

(Turkey's atrocities against the Kurds haven't been covered much in the West, because Turkey is our ally. But right into the Gulf War they were bombing in Kurdish areas, and tens of thousands of people were driven out.)

Now the Western goal is to use the Iraqi Kurds as a weapon to try and restore what's called "stability"-meaning their own kind of system-in Iraq. The West is using the Iraqi Kurds to destroy the Turkish Kurds, since that will extend Turkey's power in the region, and the Iraqi Kurds are cooperating.

In October 1992, there was a very ugly incident in which there was a kind of pincers movement between the Turkish army and the lraqi Kurdish forces to expel and destroy Kurdish guerrillas from Turkey.

Iraqi Kurdish leaders and some sectors of the population cooperated because they thought they could gain something by it. You could understand their position-not necessarily approve of it, that's another question-but you could certainly understand it.

These are people who are being crushed and destroyed from every direction. If they grasp at some straw for survival, it's not surprising- even if grasping at that straw means helping to kill people like their cousins across the border.

That's the way conquerors work.

Synagogues Bombed in Turkey
Anti-Semitic Attacks Should Not Surprise Us

We should not be surprised by the near-simultaneous bombings of two synagogues in Istanbul, Turkey, on November 15, 2003. 23 killed. 260 wounded.

In 1986, Palestinian terrorists shot dead 22 worshippers in one of the synagogues attacked in this bombing, Neve Shalom.

The U.S. warned the Turkish authorities about two months before the bombings that terrorists could strike at Israeli or American targets in the country and that members of an Islamic extremist group had crossed into Turkey from either Iran or Iraq.

But the real reason we should expect attacks on Jews will happen now and in the future is the strong resurgence of anti-Semitism worldwide in the past few years.

Anti-Semitism Growing in Turkey As EU Considers Membership Talks
From Armeniapedia.org

Harut Sassounian Commentary 2004 December

Turkish officials often boast that there has never been any anti-Semitism in their country. Such patently false claims are made by Turks for the sole purpose of ingratiating themselves to American Jews and the government of Israel. In return, the Turks expect to secure Jewish lobbying assistance against the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the U.S. Congress. The fact is that Jews, like all other minorities in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey, were subjected to all sorts of inhuman treatment. As a result, very few Jews, Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians remain in Turkey today.

As evidence of growing anti-Semitism in today's Turkey, in October 2004, the Turkish Birikim magazine published a petition titled, "Zero Tolerance for Anti-Semitism." It was signed by more than 100 prominent Turkish and Jewish individuals of various professional backgrounds living in Turkey and abroad. Here are some excerpts from that petition:

"As long as a danger is not properly pronounced, it cannot be fought against. On the contrary, vague words can only serve to hide the evil.

"We the undersigned wish to draw attention to the ever-present and steadily increasing ANTI-SEMITISM in Turkey.

"The various historical examples of racist violence and discrimination against non-Turkish, non-Muslim, non-Sunni citizens of the Turkish Republic have been, even though to a limited extent, pointed out and criticized, whereas anti-Semitism remains, with few exceptions, a subject which is met with silence, underestimation, or outright denial.

"Organized groups in Turkey that had never before found common ideological ground have come together, especially since the outbreak of the Iraq war, in an unprecedented coalition based on opposition to the State of Israel.

The Islamist sector, whose hatred of Jews is embodied in the State of Israel, joined the leftists in parades chanting the slogan, 'NO to the Iraq War.'

"Groups that proclaim opposition to bloody nationalistic animosities, imprisonment, and militarism, are unabashedly taking sides in the Middle East conflict. Instead of condemning the violence on both sides and seeking peace and non-violent solutions which are so urgently needed, they condemn and demonize Israel, calling it 'more illegitimate,' 'more dangerous' than other nations on earth, even sharing with the Islamists a call for its destruction, while embracing the perpetrators of violence in the other side of the conflict as 'victims' within a rhetoric of solidarity with the oppressed.

"Publications have become the vehicles for promoting confusion of concepts like Nazism, fascism, Zionism, the Holocaust, genocide, etc., emptying these of their contents and blurring their differences. They debase the Holocaust by depriving it from its historical uniqueness, thus giving a green light to those who deny the Holocaust.

"Anti-Semitism today is most actively perpetrated by the Islamist press, a large segment of which has gone so far as undauntedly praising Adolf Hitler for his 'foresight.' Concurrently, there has been an unprecedented array of publications and campaigns against so-called 'Sabetayists' [descendants of followers of Shabbatai Zvi], whose Jewish roots are traced down and underscored in a manner reminiscent of the Nazi obsession with creating a 'pure race' targeting them as the evil-intentioned people of a secret sect which is integral to the 'Jewish plot to dominate the world.' "This rising tide of anti-Semitism has been allowed to flow unhindered in the channels of the Islamist as well as the mainstream media and to settle into the Turkish daily life and discourse. It is now second nature to find a 'Jewish finger' under every stone, and to invent various conspiracy theories with 'the Jew' as the villain. "We hereby proclaim our objection to this unquestioned and pervasive pattern of anti-Semitic presumptions, and our determination to have ZERO TOLERANCE TO ANTI-SEMITISM, to get informed, to object, to write, to draw, to raise our voice and to be in solidarity with all who feel and think likewise."

Interestingly, among the signatories are not only righteous Turks like Taner Akcam and Ragip Zarakolu who write truthfully about the Armenian Genocide, but also historical revisionists like Ergun Kirlikovali and Mahmut Esat Ozan who actively and constantly deny the Armenian Genocide.

It is significant that even these Turkish propagandists are openly stating that there is growing anti-Semitism in Turkey. Even more amazing is the fact that these two individuals, who parrot the misinformation spewed by the Turkish government, have actually signed this petition acknowledging that "racist violence" has been committed against "non-Turkish, non-Muslim" minorities in Turkey - possibly an admission of the Armenian Genocide!

THE MIDDLE EAST MEDIA RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Special Dispatch Series - No. 900
April 28, 2005 No.900

Antisemitism in the Turkish Media: Part 1

The rising antisemitism in the Turkish media is a complex phenomenon that manifests itself in several forms:

1. Animosity towards Jews, Judaism and 'Jewish lobbies.' Jews are targeted as individuals, a community, people and "race," and as a sinister political entity seeking Jewish dominance on world affairs, businesses and media. Jews are demonized in many conspiracy theories including causing earthquakes, globalization, and the creation of Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia.

2. A hostile approach towards the Jewish citizens of Turkey, questioning their loyalty; blaming them of treason and for the fall of the Ottoman Empire; characterizing them with derogatory adjectives; inciting the public by citing Koran verses hostile to them; and creating an atmosphere conducive to violence. [1] This type of antisemitism also targets Masonic lodges and freemasons for their alleged connections with Judaism.

3. Antisemitism that in recent years has turned into a harsh campaign, which some Turkish intellectuals have called "a witch hunt" against the 'Dönme' [2] who are regarded as 'hidden Jews' posing as Muslims. They are blamed for helping to found the modern Republic of Turkey as a 'spare' Jewish state, for holding all key positions' in Turkey and for ruling the country.

4. Antisemitism directed at Israel and Zionism. The word 'Zionists' often replaces the word 'Jews' in the press.

This is the first part in a series of reports which will be released in the coming weeks. The following are excerpts from articles in the Turkish press dealing with antisemitism (the format of the text appears as in the original):

"The Disgusting Form of Racism Called Antisemitism, is Fast Growing and Causing the Increased Interest in 'Mein Kampf'"

In an article titled 'Mein Kampf and the Protocols of Zion', Ayse Hür wrote in the left of center, liberal daily Radikal: [3]

"Recently there are two interesting books in the 'bestseller' lists: Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf and the Protocols of Zion. Mein Kampf which is the 'handbook' for the ultra- nationalists of Turkey was translated [into Turkish] and published about 45 times between the years of 1940 and 2005. […] the Protocols of Zion, which inspired Mein Kampf, was published in full or in summarized form over 100 times during 1943-2004. Mein Kampf which is thought to sell about 1,000 copies a year, is now being marketed by 11 publishers.

"[…] Sami Celik, the owner of Emre Publications, who recently printed 31,000 copies told Aksam newspaper on February 27, 2005: 'Following our research and observations, we thought that Mein Kampf would be a book that would be sought after and read by the public. […] Mein Kampf was [indeed] affected by [recent] developments and its sale figures peaked.' [4] As a matter of fact it has become a sort of handbook for the [electorate] base of MHP [the ultra-nationalist 'National Movement Party'] and 'Genc Parti' [the Youth Party]. Some claim that it is very popular among the students at police academies.

"In the same newspaper [Aksam] we read sociologist Prof. Mustafa Erkal who said: 'Reading Hitler is a reaction. Israel's policies and goals cause a reaction. Naturally, people get curious about Hitler's antisemitism and want to learn more about what he did and wanted to do.' What our academician failed to say is the fact that in Turkey, as in the rest of the world, animosity toward the Jews, that disgusting form of racism called antisemitism, is fast growing and causing the increased interest for Mein Kampf. We know that publishing this book in Europe is banned; and in Germany even its possession is a crime. […]

"Having 'Mein Kampf' and the 'Protocols' on our bestseller list today, must make us think twice before we claim 'there is no antisemitism here.'"

"It is the Jews Who Should Read Mein Kampf"

Columnist Arslan Tekin of the nationalist-Islamic daily Yenicağ, wrote in an article titled 'Yes, Mein Kampf should be taught in schools:' "Everybody should read it, and should learn the reasons why Hitler came about." [5]

11 days later, Tekin wrote in his column in Yenicağ: [6] "Can a Hitler rise in America? It can happen… What was [true] for Germany before Hitler came to power is [now] exceedingly true for America. Big banks, big TV organs, big newspapers, all the tools that can trap the public opinion are in the hands of the Jews… Politics is run by them too.

"What is the proportion of the Jewish [population] in America of 200 million [sic]. Must not even be two percent. They have an image beyond what their numbers merit. I am sorry for the Jews… How come they do not think about the effect their disproportionate 'grandeur' would have on the majority of the [American] people! In Germany, Hitler did not rise just single-handedly. He only answered the questions asked by his people.

"Hey Jews! The world cannot bear to have another Hitler [because of you]. Your disproportionate [presence]; your recklessness; your daring to burn the world for [even] one Jew, makes the American people and everyone in the world ask the question: 'what's happening here?' Do you know how the US is seen now? [It looks like] the biggest Jewish empire of the world. […]

"I, like everyone else, am seeing this situation… Hitler's Mein Kampf must be read especially by the Jews.

"A madman like Hitler does not just come about [without a reason]… The book which you define as 'nonsense' has set the world on fire. The Jews should think about the reasons [why]."

"Hitler Was a Man of Foresight"

Abdurrahim Karakoç, a columnist at the Islamic newspaper Vakit praised Hitler: [7]

"[…] It is impossible not to admire the foresight of Adolph Hitler, who is presented to public opinion as 'racist, sadistic, and monstrous.' Way back then, Hitler foresaw what would happen these [present] days. He cleansed off these swindler Jews, who believe in racism for a religion and take pleasure in bathing the world in blood, because he knew that they would become [this] big a curse for the world.

"[…] Hitler indeed was a man of foresight […] So Hitler did the job, yet Israel is presented to the world public opinion as the innocent victim.

"[…] The second man with foresight is evidently Osama bin Laden. If a stone hits a dog's leg somewhere in the world, Osama bin Laden gets blamed. […] Bin Laden had foreseen what would happen in Iraq, in Palestine, and in the prisons of Guantanamo.

"He [Osama] alone, or perhaps with a few friends, defies the superpowers of the world and sets fear inside the very shelters of the oppressors. […] It was Hitler yesterday, and it is Osama bin Laden today […]"

"Couldn't You Find Other People to Send to Turkey, Than the 'Jew' Edelman and the 'Jew' Feith?"

In reaction to a Wall Street Journal article by Robert Pollock [8] [on the rising anti-Americanism in Turkey] columnist Serdar Kuru wrote in the nationalist Turkish daily Ortadoğu: [9]

"[Pollock's] article determines that Turkey is becoming a paranoid third world country. And the reason they think we are paranoid is the widespread belief among Turks that America is [nothing but a] toy in the hands of Jews who have designs of aggression against Turkey. The author of the article seems to be annoyed at the exposure of the Jewish identities of the American Ambassador Edelman and later of [Douglas] Feith during his visit [to Turkey].

"[…] In reality it is clear who ordered this poor shooter [Robert Pollock, WSJ] to write this article […] Our problem is with the Zionist Jews who have grabbed every corner in America and the Evangelist Christians that they [the Jews] feed, who plan [together] to set on fire the whole world and our country. The ones who are disturbed by people, who oppose their plans, are the same ones who prepare these plans.

" The Wall Street Journal, where this article was published belongs to the Dow Jones Corporation. Peter R. Kahn, the head of Dow Jones is Jewish and is a member of CFR. This man's wife Karen House is the head of the Wall Street Journal. She too is Jewish and a member of CFR. Mrs. Karen is also the director of RAND, the think tank that prepared the world domination plans for the Bush team. Vice President of Dow Jones, Joseph Stern, is one of America's most famous Jewish lawyers. A Board of Directors member is Lewis Campbell who owns Textron the gun manufacturer and heads the security operations of the capitalist Round Table. One other Director of the Board is former president of American Express, Harvey Golubda and he is Jewish.

"By now you must have understood why Wall Street Journal is disturbed by Turkey's anti-Zionist attitude. This Jewish Dow Jones Corporation also has an exchange fund called "Dow Jones Islamic Market Turkey." This strange exchange fund [claims] to do brokerage with no interest. Some stupid fools who think they can make money without paying interest must be entrusting their monies into the hands of Jews. As you can see my friends, the reactions to the Turkish attitude towards American and Zionist expansionisms are not objective […] they are coming from the Zionists themselves.

"Is it our fault that behind every immorality, incitement, conspiracy and filth there is a Zionist ? Couldn't you send to Turkey people other than the Jew Edelman and the Jew Feith? […]"

"Our Times are Similar to 1930's in Germany"

In the leftist-liberal daily Radikal, Murat Necip Arman wrote: [10]

"The discussions we are having now are almost identical to the ones they had in Germany during the 1930's. At those days the press articles were not openly targeting the non-Germanic races yet, but were often arguing that they [the Jews] dominated the economy and that they were conducting [secret] activities that would ruin the fiber of the German society.[…]

"On New Year's Eve, in a TV channel which does not feel the need to hide its ties to a [Turkish] political party, it was recounted at great length that the Jews are a cursed people and that for this reason it was obligatory for the Muslims to eradicate them [the Jews]. […] it should not be forgotten that to openly say such a sentence constitutes a crime. […] While this neo-antisemitism is recklessly manifested in almost all media organs, in the eyes of the masses Israel's aggression towards Palestinians provides justification for such a dangerous kind of racism.

"[…] This animosity towards the non-Muslims, the like of which we have not witnessed in many years, is hovering over Turkey and agitating masses of people who are not bothered by its [grave] consequences.

"As I said, what we have here [in Turkey] presents similarities with Germany of the 1930's. I hope common sense prevails in Turkey and this dangerous trend does not lead to frightening results. […]

"At least the national press must keep in mind its social responsibility in presenting these matters with a cool head. Political parties can play dangerous games for political gains. […] But the media's common sense is essential […]"

"Persecution by Hitler Much Exaggerated"

Upon the German Government's decision to ban the publication of the Turkish Islamic daily Vakit in Germany, a columnist at Vakit, Hüseyin Üzmez, wrote: [11]

"[…] It is true that persecution [of Jews] by Hitler is much exaggerated. We are sick and tired of [listening to] stories of the inhuman persecution and torture he committed against the Jews. It is said that Hitler himself was a Jew… that he committed cruelty only to force the Jews to migrate from Europe to Palestine … and that it was the Israeli Zionists who dictated these acts upon him, at the time they were founding Israel. Two great powers (money and media) are in Jewish hands. The 'treacherous local collaborators' and some international organizations are also in their command.

"All humanity knows the fact that they [the Jews] are unequalled in [their] lobbying [skills]. With all this power and the tools, they can make or break anyone. […] Who can oppose them? We saw the best example of this in what the German Interior Minister did to our newspaper Vakit. Against all the European human rights agreements, German police was putting pressure on our paper. We were in the midst of a judicial process. Our paper was illegally shut down […] Then the German Interior Minister interfered. He banned our paper. […] This was a [perfect] example of execution without a trial. […] It is obvious that he [the interior minister] was directed [by someone high above] into making such a decision. […] This is how powerful the Zionists are. And this is the supposedly 'civilized and modern' West.

"[…] the German Interior Minister, who was so angry at us because we said 'Hitler had not killed six million Jews,' cannot be German. We are very curious to know whether he is a Jew?"

"Jewish Paranoia"

Columnist Yusuf Kaplan of the Islamic Yeni Şafak writes: [12]

"Jewish paranoia ( = fanaticism) is a phenomenon found in Jews that is an integral part of their character, blood and soul. Since paranoia is the form of Jewish existence and self- expression, they have never refrained from exposing it at every occasion, in the past and the present.

"[…] the Jewish paranoia can reach barbaric, cruel and inhuman dimensions […]

"Jewish paranoia has determined the color and the shape of our times. What keeps this paranoia alive is the power that the Jews possess [which enables them] to shape and direct the politics, economies and cultures of especially the western countries.

"[…] Jews also rule the Western universities and world media. […]

"Jewish desire to dominate everything in the Western countries, and the way they easily and arrogantly exploit organizations and individuals to serve Jewish interests, may end up causing a short circuit within the democratic institutions of the West. Their nosy interference with everything, and their actions beyond the reach of their size, have already started to draw serious reactions in the Western countries. Because the Jewish paranoia is blown to extreme, forced and artificial dimensions, it can explode any day and take care of them [the Jews] and cost them dearly."

"The Jews and Christian Zionism"

In his article titled 'Globalization Projects and Nationalists' Israfil Kumbasar of the nationalist-Islamic daily Yenicağ, summarizes a lecture by Mehmet Gül [13] at a recent [pan-Turkic] Turan Cultural Foundation's meeting: [14]

"[…] The only 'secret' power behind the globalization project are the Jews and the masons!...

"The 'Jewish Zionists whose goal is the 'total Jewish domination of the world' claim that a 'messiah' will come down from the sky and will build the 'World Kingdom'!...

"The same expectation is widely shared by the 'Christian Zionists' who accept all that the 'Old Testament' says!... The Christian Zionists believe that all humanity will become Christian with the coming of Jesus, the 'son of God'!...

"The Neo-Con representatives of Evangelism that amalgamates the 'Christian Zionism' and the 'Jewish Zionism' are ruling America now!...[…] they are looking for 'sacred allies' in the Islamic world, who will serve their purposes!...

"In recent years some communities with 'messianic views' are appearing within the Islamic world […] !...

"[…] We can understand the games played on the Muslim world if we learn that the 'Wahhabism' which originated in Saudi Arabia is plotted by the 'masons' to 'leave the Muslims behind.' Bahaism, Kadianism […] and other 'messiah waiting' Muslim communities all help serve 'the new world order'!... […] it seems that these 'Zionist Muslims' will soon say that 'greater Israel' is the will of the great architect of the universe'!... The Muslim Turks who follow them will only see the realities when it is too late and our lands between the Euphrates and the Tigris will already be in Israeli hands.

"[…] 'Messianic belief' is a 'Zionist trap' for all humanity! […]"

[1] On November 15, 2003, two major synagogues in Istanbul were bombed by Turkish Islamic terrorists, killing 26 and wounding hundreds, most of them Muslim Turks who were in the vicinity. On August 21, 2003, a Jewish dentist, Dr. Y.Yahya, had been murdered in his clinic. The perpetrator confessed upon his arrest that he had wanted to kill 'a Jew' [after what he read about the Jews in the press]. On March 9, 2004, a Masonic lodge in Istanbul was also attacked by two suicide bombers, killing one and wounding five, and the bombers were later found to have had ties with the synagogue bombers. A gun used in the attack against the Masonic lodge proved to be the same one used in the execution style murder of the Jewish dentist.

[2] The 'Dönme' are descendants of the Jewish followers of a self-proclaimed messiah, Sabbetai Sevi (1626-1676) who was forced by the sultan to convert to Islam in 1666. They consider themselves Muslims and officially are recognized as such. Dönme is the Turkish word for 'convert' but it carries overtones of 'turncoat' as well.

Why is Mein Kampf a bestseller in Turkey?
By Associated Press March 19, 2005

In Turkish bookshops, there's one best seller that some book shops are hesitant to put on the shelves next to the rest.

New paperback versions of Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" have suddenly become top sellers in Turkey, raising questions about whether the sales reflect growing anti-Semitism and anti-American sentiment in this Muslim country, or if it's just curiosity and a cheap read.

The books were printed without the permission of the Finance Ministry of the German state of Bavaria, which handles the book's copyright. The ministry said Friday that it had asked Germany's federal Foreign Ministry to instruct diplomats in Turkey to investigate possible lawsuits in an attempt to prevent the continued publication of the books.

Hitler wrote Mein Kampf -- "My Struggle" -- in the 1920s, filling it with anti-Semitic diatribes and his strategy for world domination.

Tens of thousands of copies of the book have sold in Turkey in recent months since at least two cheap paperback versions were released.

Many people are not sure why they're such hot sellers.

Analysts point out that many in this Muslim country are angry over the violence between Israelis and their fellow Muslim Palestinians. There is also increased frustration with U.S. policy in neighboring Iraq and in general in the region. Some say the book sales are a reaction to Turkey's bid to join the European Union.

But others point out that the book can be purchased for as little as 6 new Turkish lira ($4.50) and many Turks may simply be curious.

Bavaria was designated guardian of Hitler's estate by victorious World War II allies, and said it remained vigilant about the copyright.

"The book "Mein Kampf" should not be reprinted," Bavarian Finance Minister Kurt Faltlhauser said in a statement. "The state of Bavaria administers the copyright very restrictively to prevent an increase of Nazi ideas."

The Bavarian ministry is asking the embassy in Turkey through the Foreign Ministry to "examine the initiation of legal steps," the ministry said.

Lina Filiba, executive vice president of Turkey's Jewish Community, called the popularity of Hitler's book "disturbing" but said price and curiosity due to prominent media attention were major factors.

She added the sales were part of a "worrying trend" with anti-Semitic publications -- such as the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion," a 19th-century anti-Semitic tract -- even on sale in bustling department stores.

"I think there's an increase in anti-Semitic, anti-American, and anti-foreigner feeling that have paralleled (the) Dec. 17" decision by the European Union to open membership talks with Turkey, Filiba said.

The country's top seller, "Metal Storm," is a novel about a fictional war between Turkey and the United States. Conspiracy theory books are popular sellers and the press is extremely critical of the United States and Israel.

At least two publishing houses, Emre and Manifesto, have released cheap versions of Hitler's book this year.

Oguz Tektas from Manifesto said it had printed 30,000 copies of the book -- a relatively large number for Turkey -- and had sold at least 25,000 so far.

"It has nothing to do with anti-Semitism. Our only aim was commercial," he said.

A company list of best sellers across Turkey listed the Emre edition of the book as the No. 4 four top seller for the D and R bookshop. Officials from the Remzi bookstore confirmed the book was among its top 40 sellers.

But that doesn't mean the shops are comfortable with the book. In one D and R shop in Istanbul, the book couldn't be found with the other best sellers, but was instead on a lower shelf.

"That's where they told us to put it," said saleswoman Nihan Bora. Still, "it's selling a lot."

At the Dost bookshop in Ankara, the book was on a high shelf, far out of reach, where the cover featuring a picture of Hitler, can't be seen. The manager said he was selling about five books a day and added they intentionally were not including it in the best sellers section.

"I saw the book on TV and got curious about Hitler's life and decided to buy it," said Asli Ugur, 20, a university student, who also bought a book about Cuban revolutionary Che Guevera.
