Last Monday, some of my friends and I got together for a late lunch at a local grill. All eyes were glued to the tv in disbelief as we saw the stockmarket suffer the meltdown after the House rejected the bailout plan. At one point it dipped 820 points. We basically witnessed the disappearance of many people's retirement funds, college funds and so on. This was some really scary shit. All our wonderful president could do about it was to simply comment on the subject instead of showing some leadership on how to get us out of this mess. This mess does not simply affect Americans, it affects the entire globe and all our politicians could do was point the finger at the other guy. No one stood up to say "the buck stops here".
Whom and what do we put the blame on? The CEOs and greed? Perhaps, but I believe that the average American is also to blame because most Americans live beyond their means. It's called "keeping up with the Jones'" Instead of living in a 200000.00 dollar house they buy a 500,000.00 dollar house. Instead of driving a 4 or 6 cylinder car they drive gigantic gas guzzlers. Its all about who has the nicest toys and the lending institutions were more than ready to give them credit for them even though they didn't deserve it.
In the 80ies we had the savings and loan crises which fucked up our economy for 3 years, but at least some prominent business people went to jail. God only knows how long our economy will remain in the toilet. Who do we lock up now? It's really sad to see this once great country reduced a place run by a bunch of greedy, biblebeating neocons. I wonder when the sane will wake up and declare that enough is enough. I'll get off my soapbox now.
PS: Lotsa mansions for sale in the Hamptons now.
