Ice cream diplomacy: Talat stuns Ledra Street shoppers

SHOPPERS on Ledra Street were left speechless yesterday when Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat decided to take an impromptu stroll through the newly-opened crossing point.

Although Talat has crossed to the Greek Cypriot side in the past as leader of the Republican Turkish Party, it was his first visit in his capacity as Turkish Cypriot leader. It was also Talat’s first visit to Ledra Street since he was a schoolboy, he said.

Asked when he had last been on this side of Ledra Street, he said: “In my childhood maybe. I don’t recognise the place, so I could say it’s my first time here.”

Surrounded by security and several aides, including his spokesman Hasan Er?ak?ca, Talat received a warm welcome from Ledra Street shopkeepers and from both Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

He crossed over just after 11am and spent a good hour strolling around, as people kept coming up and shaking his hand and inviting him into their shops and also to sit down for coffee.

He gave in to the invite from Costas Vrontis, the owner of the Heraclis ice cream parlour, who treated Talat and his aides to three scoops of vanilla ice cream and coffee, while reporters and television crews jostled for the best position to hear what the Turkish Cypriot leader was saying.

"I was told that this is the best ice cream in Cyprus. I'm not sure about that claim, but it is very good ice cream," said Talat.

When he was asked whether he was going to meet President Demetris Christofias for coffee on Ledra Street, Talat said: “Maybe next time.”

“I didn’t plan to cross, but today in the morning since I was visiting the area I thought let’s also go to the other side.” Talat acknowledged that his visit might draw some criticism on the Turkish Cypriot side, but he said: “We live in a democratic society”.

Continuing his stroll after thanking Vrontis in Greek for his ice cream, Talat dropped €10 into a busker’s violin case before entering the Ledra Arcade, greeting more people as he went.

He spent a good ten minutes in a music shop, coming out with several CDs – a Beatles album, Vangelis, Mikis Theodorakis, and a collection of rembetika songs. He had asked for the rather symbolic Pink Floyd album, ‘The Wall’, but it was not in stock.

With his purchases being carried out by an aide, Talat headed back towards the crossing at around 12.15pm. “My message today is to convey my best wishes to everyone,” he said. When asked about further crossing points, he said the only other one on the agenda was Limnitis.

“All our efforts are going towards a solution,” he said. “With a solution you don’t need crossing points. I prefer to solve the Cyprus problem.”

Before heading back to the north, Talat purchased a packet of Cyprus coffee and went to visit a woman in another shop who had wanted to see him but could not go outside because she had a broken leg. He came out with a brass ornament.

He didn’t rule out another trip across to Ledra Street. “Yes, if I have time.”

As he left the Greek Cypriot side, Talat told journalists he would be back soon “because I have not seen all I wanted to see,” and added: “I send my best wishes to all those who are working for peace.”

As he left, Talat shook hands with the surprised but cheerful looking police and customs officials on the Greek Cypriot side of the crossing and headed back to the north.

Just inside the Turkish Cypriot side, he sat for a coffee with journalists from both sides and spoke of his wishes for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Talat said he had crossed to the south because he had wanted to relay “a message of peace and friendship”, and when asked if he had been surprised by the warm reception he had received from the Greek Cypriots he had met, he said he knew many Greek Cypriots and had therefore been expecting to be treated well.

Indeed, referring to the gifts he had been given, he said: “I went shopping and came back with gifts.”

One of the gifts was a brass boat, given to him by a shop keeper close to the crossing. Describing the gift later, Talat said, “I was given this boat and told that it is sailing towards peace. It’s a very nice and meaningful present.”

Having shopped during his trip, Talat will undoubtedly come under fire from Turkish Cypriot hardliners who view shopping in the south as betrayal of the national cause. Talat pre-empted such criticism by saying: “Everyone is free to do as they please within the rules… so I don’t see any problem with shopping.” He added, however, that he had not had the opportunity to compare prices, but said he believed “certain products are cheaper in the south, and others are cheaper in the north”.

Talat rounded off his Ledra Street tour by chatting with shopkeepers and tourists in the Turkish Cypriot Arasta Street. When a Ukrainian young man told Talat his country had also been racked by ethnic and political upheaval Talat said: “You have to solve your problems yourself, but if you like I could come and mediate for you.”

Αιφνιδίασε ο Μεχμέτ Αλί Ταλάτ με τη χθεσινή του επίσκεψη

Επίθεση φιλίας στη Λήδρας

Μίλησε με κόσμο, ψώνισε δίσκους με ελληνική μουσική, έφαγε το παγωτό του κι έστειλε μηνύματα καλής θέλησης
Αρκετούς πόντους σε επικοινωνιακό, συνάμα και σε πολιτικό επίπεδο, κατάφερε να κερδίσει χθες, μέσα σε διάστημα μιάμιση μόλις ώρας, ο Μεχμέτ Αλί Ταλάτ, παίρνοντας την απόφαση να περπατήσει την οδό Λήδρας στις ελεύθερες περιοχές.

Στα μάτια όσων έτυχε να βρίσκονται λίγο μετά τις 11 το πρωί στην περιοχή της Λήδρας διέκρινε κανείς πως ο περίπατος του τ/κ ηγέτη και η διαχυτικότητα με την οποία χαιρετούσε στα ελληνικά, τουρκικά και αγγλικά τον απλό κόσμο, γκρέμιζε έστω και στιγμιαία, μερικά από τα "ταμπού" που έχουν επέλθει όλα αυτά τα χρόνια μεταξύ των δυο κοινοτήτων. Από τις δηλώσεις του, αλλά ακόμα κι από τα προϊόντα (ψηφιακούς δίσκους με ελληνική μουσική) που επέλεξε να αγοράσει από τις ελεύθερες περιοχές, ήταν εμφανέστατος ο στόχος του. Συντονισμένος πλήρως με τους παλμούς της νέας ατμόσφαιρας, πραγματοποίησε μια άνευ προηγουμένου επίθεση φιλίας προς την ε/κ κοινότητα, ρίχνοντας παράλληλα την "πρόκληση" προς τον πρόεδρο Χριστόφια να ακολουθήσει σε ένα άτυπο διαγωνισμό κινήσεων καλής θέλησης. Και ο στόχος αυτός φάνηκε να επιτυγχάνεται αν προσμετρήσει κανείς την ιδιαιτέρως θερμή υποδοχή που του επεφύλαξαν οι Ε/Κ που βρέθηκαν στο δρόμο του (Ρεπορτάζ από τον περίπατο Ταλάτ, στη σελίδα 20).

Με θετικό τρόπο είδαν και αρκετοί Τ/Κ την πρωτοβουλία Ταλάτ, η οποία και, προφανώς, θα συμβάλει στο να διαλυθούν τα σύννεφα καχυποψίας που έχουν σχηματιστεί, όσον αφορά τις προθέσεις του στις τάξεις όσων Τ/Κ των στήριξαν στο παρελθόν. Αρκετά επικοινωνιακός και ανθρώπινος και θυμίζοντας κατά πολύ τον Ταλάτ του 2003, έβγαλε για λίγο το κοστούμι του "προέδρου" και θέλησε να στείλει μηνύματα συμβίωσης και συμφιλίωσης. "Να βρούμε αυτά που μας ενώνουν για να λύσουμε όσα μας χωρίζουν", έλεγε λίγο αργότερα κατά την επιστροφή του στα κατεχόμενα.

"Ξέρετε πως νιώθω"
Ένα στοιχείο που προκύπτει αβίαστα από τις δηλώσεις Ταλάτ ήταν η απουσία "εμπρηστικών" αναφορών σε σχέση με το Κυπριακό. "Ξέρετε πώς νιώθω. Θεωρώ επείγουσα τη λύση του Κυπριακού", είπε για να συνεχίσει: "το μήνυμά μου σήμερα είναι να μεταφέρω τις καλύτερες μου ευχές στους Ε/Κ και την ε/κ κυβέρνηση". Με την ίδια διάθεση απάντησε και στις ερωτήσεις των δημοσιογράφων, αποφεύγοντας να υποδαυλίσει με οποιοδήποτε τρόπο το καλό κλίμα. "Ίσως να μην υπάρχει κοινή αντίληψη, αλλά υπάρχει κοινή βούληση ή ας πούμε κοινή ευχή και επιθυμία", τόνισε.

"Δεν μπορούμε να αναμένουμε ότι θα έχουμε τις ίδιες απόψεις αναφορικά με τον χαρακτήρα της λύσης. Το σημαντικό, όμως, είναι ότι έχουμε την πρόθεση", ανέφερε και, χωρίς περιστροφές, παραδέχθηκε ότι με τον Δημήτρη Χριστόφια ήδη έχουν κάνει κάποια πρόοδο. "Η παρατήρησή μου είναι ότι η ε/κ πλευρά επιθυμεί και αυτή τη λύση. Ευελπιστώ και είμαι αισιόδοξος ότι θα προχωρήσουμε", συμπλήρωσε, τονίζοντας ότι μεταξύ των δυο ηγετών υπάρχει συναντίληψη για "λύση διζωνικής δικοινοτικής ομοσπονδίας βασισμένης στην πολιτική ισότητα των δυο κοινοτήτων".

Είδε τα οφέλη
Για να διαπιστώσει και να δει τα οφέλη που επέφερε η διάνοιξη της Λήδρας είπε πως πέρασε στις ελεύθερες περιοχές ο κ. Ταλάτ, επισημαίνοντας ότι τέτοιες ενέργειες βοηθούν μεν, αλλά δεν λύνουν το Κυπριακό. "Στην πραγματικότητα δεν σκέφτηκα αρχικά να περάσω σε αυτή την πλευρά, όμως αυτό το πρωί είπα ας περάσω και να δω τα οφέλη από τη διάνοιξη", εξήγησε και ανέφερε πως, πέραν του Λιμνίτη, δεν υπάρχουν στην ατζέντα των συζητήσεων άλλα οδοφράγματα για διάνοιξη. "Με μια συνολική διευθέτηση δεν θα υπάρχει ανάγκη διάνοιξης σημείων διέλευσης. Ετσι, για να ξεφορτωθώ αυτή την πίεση για διάνοιξη και άλλων σημείων διέλευσης προτιμώ να λύσω το Κυπριακό", κατέληξε.

Γνώριζε η κυβέρνηση
Ως ενισχυτική κίνηση του καλού κλίματος είδε η κυβέρνηση Χριστόφια την πρωτοβουλία Ταλάτ. Ο κυβερνητικός εκπρόσωπος, Στέφανος Στεφάνου, διευκρίνισε πως η κυβέρνηση ειδοποιήθηκε λίγο πριν την επίσκεψη και "όχι μόνο του επέτρεψε να έρθει, αλλά τον διευκόλυνε κιόλας. Άλλωστε, είναι ηγέτης της τ/κ κοινότητας και εμείς θέλουμε να διευκολύνουμε την επαφή".

Σημείωσε, επίσης, ότι ο κ. Ταλάτ και η συνοδεία του πέρασαν χωρίς διατυπώσεις, ανταποδίδοντας, όπως είπε, τις διευκολύνσεις που έχουν δοθεί στο παρελθόν στον κ. Χριστόφια. "Τούτη την ώρα που προσπαθούμε να υπάρχει ένα καλό κλίμα, να υπάρχει διάλογος για να βοηθήσουμε τα πράγματα, έτσι ώστε να ανοίξουμε την προοπτική της λύσης, πρέπει να διευκολύνουμε και όχι να δυσκολεύουμε", είπε, αμφισβητώντας ισχυρισμούς ότι άνδρες της φρουράς Ταλάτ μετέφεραν όπλα.
