Looking for serious responses from the usual tech savvy people.

I'd like to know if and how/what is needed, to hook up a satellite and the set top box, to a pc.

It should be possible with any computer i think as before cable people used to have the option to hook up to satellite internet via a dish or if their region is unable to support cable. I beleive you will obviously need some form of converter to connect the laptop to the disc and then a TV out on your video card to connect it to the TV.

Ah slingmedia thing isnt sold in Aus.

I'll be a bit more specific.
If possible, I would like to run a cable or two(or however many) from the lounge were the tv with the sat is, to my bedroom through the roof and hook them up to my computer.
Im 99.9% sure my video card has tv out or s-video or something of that sort. I'm thinking of getting a new one(this one, 8500GT is a bit dated) so if tv out is necessary that's not a problem.
I'v got one of those tv tuner cards(usb) on my pc if thats of any relevance...

Why don’t you tell us what you exactly want to do precious...? Do you wanna watch Foxtel or UBI in your bedroom...? If yes, why not get a spare TV or if your current monitor has extra inputs, just use that...? You can do this wireless as well by utilising a sender & receiver combo that retail for less than $100.

Do you wanna record these shows...? Then, you can either buy a cheap DVD recorder with HDD or a PVR and make full use of their timer recordings, editing software etc... If it must be your comp, you will need a video card with TV in. TV out is only used to display the picture from your comp on a TV, it also doesn't carry audio signal. You need a card with VIVO (Video In Video Out) to capture any analogue signal to your comp, in this case the picture from your decoder box.

TV tuner cards receive FTA (free to air) channels and won’t be of any use to receive satellite transmission. Some of them have VIVO but these are generally PCI cards, I am not aware of any USB models having VIVO, I doubt yours would have it.

As far as i know, all video cards only have video out and the la-*test*-('") cards have two DVI out ports only, no more S-video.

Correct. Just buy a TV Card, stick in your PCI slot, smack bang problem solved. They only cost anything from $30 to $100 depending on the brand/quality and all have Video in ports so you can view or record anything on your pc.

VIVO used to be a big thing in AGP days when people were still capturing analogue signal. With firewire or USB2 becoming the norm on most if not all devices, NVidia has moved away from it but ATI still make them.

I don’t think all have video in ports. They advertise video capture, but they may be talking about capturing signal from the tuner. These were quite inferior to graphics cards with video in, but that was 4-5 years ago.

you will need a PCI satellite tv card to buy. If you want to crack channels too there is in europe a box called Dreambox which can crack anything you want.

sth like this http://www.e-shop.gr/show_per.phtml?id=PER.770301

Anything...? Including Irdeto 2 encryption...?

I don't think it has been done yet.
