TL banknotes to be in circulation in 2009

The word new on the New Turkish Lira (YTL) banknote, in circulation since Jan. 1, 2005, will be eliminated. Turkish lira (TL) banknotes will be in circulation starting Jan. 1, 2009, financial sources said on Thursday.

According to the Anatolia news agency, the TL banknotes will have different shapes and sizes to prevent forgery.

Meanwhile, financial authorities plan to issue TL 200 banknotes when the TL replaces the YTL in 2009. This project is subject to confirmation. Officials said further studies are continuing on the new TL 200 banknotes.

Turkey omitted six zeroes from the Turkish Lira on Jan. 1, 2005 to make the YTL, which went into circulation on the same date. New banknotes worth 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 YTL were issued, and the kuruş was reintroduced for denominations under YTL 1.

Great! Let's hope they look a bit further than Ottoman figures to stick the reverse of the notes.

If they do change Ataturks picture on the 200TL note I for one think they should not put Yunus Emre on there but Sabiha Gokcen, the first Turkish and NATO female pilot.

what is wrong with Yunus Emre?

katastrof- 09-02-2008
Yunus Emre is fine, Sabiha Gökçen is fine. As long as it's not Genghis Khan or Atilla, or some Persian character that's dear to us as well (Mevlana, Omer Khayyam), it's fine.

Oh, and I'm totally against it saying "Banque de France" greekturkish/laugh.gif .

Arabas Perna- 09-02-2008
lol katastrof, i missed that. Yunus emre is fine, but since theres few female figures to stick on the notes it would a nice change to put her on.

I thought Gokcen wasn't considered Turk enough anymore, after rumors circulated about her possible Armenian ancestry.

I haven't heard that, but it's totally possible. If we get into actual heritages & kinship, we would have to eliminate much more important figures, and this would mostly depend on one's own definition of identity, really. She was a Turkish citizen, & self-defined as Turkish, so she's very welcome on the Turkish currency, as far as I'm concerned. She's a pretty important figure in Republic's history as well, very fitting to have her picture on a banknote, regardless of anything else.

Hmm, just looked up the wiki article, which cites two sources claiming Bosnian and Armenian heritages. Again, doesn't matter.

Yeah, if it's your idea, it's a good one.

That's true. There are even full Armenians who have the Kemalist seal of approval: Agop Dilacar/Turkologist, Berj Turker/banker, Edgar Manas/orchestrator of Turkey's anthem, among others.

But a one-drop rule is used for those who lean to the left or don't sit well with Kemalists, like Fethiye Cetin, Yucel Askin, some PKK members who may or may not be of Armenian descent...

Yücel Aşkın can also be considered as a Kemalist.

My personal opinion is putting Yunus Emre and Sabiha Gökçen on banknotes are both disgusting ideas.

Anyone who reads Yunus' poems or life can easily understand that putting his picture on a "banknote" is nothing but an insult. It sounds like Ahmedinejad Avenue in Washington DC.

Sabiha Gökçen is also responsible for the death of 10000's of civilians while peppering tons of bombs over Dersim. It makes her not someone to be proud of but a mass murderer IMHO.

Kayakiran- 09-03-2008
I don't have a problem with Turks of Armenian origin appearing on bank notes. As long as they have achieved something note worthy.

Can you source this domestos? Are we talking Dersim, 1937?

Arabas Perna- 09-03-2008
Oh interesting domestos, didn't know about that, be interesting to see some sources.

Those links don't really have much info on what you mentioned, especially with the figures. I look about a bit and found info on her participation on the air raids over Dersim in 37 against the rebellion there but again found no info in the figures or the effects of the bombing. I'll let you know if i find out more, sounds interesting.

We should have Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Timurlane, Atilla, Alparslan Han on the banknotes
