Bulgarian military couple caught photographing Greek army sites

29 August 2008 | 00:02 | FOCUS News Agency

Athens. A Bulgarian couple serving in the military was convicted of espionage in Greece on Thursday after being caught taking pictures of Greek army facilities near the border with Bulgaria, officials said, AFP reported.

The Bulgarian officers were arrested at the border town of Ormenio on Monday after being spotted photographing an army camp, a Greek military source said.

A digital camera confiscated from the couple was found to contain pictures of several military installations in the area.

A judge in the main outlying city of Orestiada sentenced the unidentified couple, aged 36 and 35, along with their 46-year-old Bulgarian driver to 15 months in prison for espionage.

All three are appealing the sentence and were set free pending trial, a local judicial source said.

The officers claimed they were tourists and intended to publish the pictures in Bulgarian military magazines, the judicial source said.

why didnt they just use google earth?

Zeus- 08-29-2008
Google Earth gives you a top down view, sometimes harder to make things out for what they are. And not all the coverage of up there is clear.

Probably the Bulgoscumfucks were taking pics 4 the turkos.

ONLY 15 months in prison? WTF?

You should smile each time you cross a border with your delivery truck. Get your photo taken just like everyone else... stinking grik troll.

so applying the same logic as suicidal idiots...they should have been shot on site?...everything would have been justified...Am I right in making this statement?...

Or only in Turkey lies the absolute shoot on site of suicidal idiots policy...

Surely they must have known that they could have been shot...Espionage is a dirty game and I don't think anyone else would have expected anything different...

What makes this even worse, they were spies and had the blessing of their state...so a shoot on site would have been well and trully justifiable...this is a bigger crime than trying to climb up a flag pole...

Hardly. Getting caught spying on greece tends to be a one or two month prison sentence affair, hardly a death sentence by any means.

and what would have happened if it was in Turkey Turkkan?...care to tell me?

For a piece of cloth they kill...for publishing they kill...don't tell me for spying they would have given them flowers to take home greekturkish/laugh.gif

PS...I consider spying a much heavier offence than trying to lower a flag...

i have to admit u can be pretty funny at times Duke

seriously though, i wonder what reason the Bulgars would have for spying on Greece?

Zeus- 08-30-2008
Good question.
They are in NATO and the EU, and we are supposedly meant to be friends now.

Instead of releasing the fucks on bail, they should be handed over to military intelligence for interrogation and an ass whooping they'll never forget.

Even though the Cold War ended in 1991 in the world of espionage it's still business as usual.

Everyone still wants to know what their neighbours are up to.

My earlier comment was a little naive, in that I forgot something known to most of us.
Even allied countries spy on each other. It's no secret. Some just don't get caught red handed like in this case.
